Net Nicknames

Posted: 03.28.2007 in Social

I am trying to come up with a new nickname to use for things like forums, web services and social networking sites (e.g., Twitter). One that I have used in the past is a combination of my name and some numbers.  Another one is simply ”transformatum” (e.g., del.icio.us). However, there several others that I basically have a hard time remembering.

What I am looking for is something that is cool sounding (like ‘frotzed’), unique (so no one else will use it) and not linked to my name or domain names (making it flexible for the future). Do you a) think this is a good idea and b) have any suggestions for how to choose one?

  1. In some circles I am sillyred, which is based on my middle name (sill) and my hair (red). So I would suggest monkeying with your middle name somehow.

(If you are curious, I was named for Anna P. Sill, a relative of mine who founded a women’s college that is now Rockford. I have an heirloom that was given to her.)

  2. I like that one and thanks for sharing the story for how it came about. I don’t have a great middle name for incorporating into a net name. It has three common nickname variants, but one of them would come across as kind of off-color.

  3. How about “freshparsley”?

I also thought of a fun one combining a variant of your middle name and your family site domain name. . .

  4. How about “freshparsley”?

Hmm…making fun of me again? Was something said in the council meeting about “dad having all the kids?” Maybe something like, “There’s my phone. Scott must be calling asking where the parsley is at.” ;)

BTW, I’ve come up with a new screen name, but I won’t mention it here so it doesn’t get googled and used by someone else. Once I’ve converted all my logons I’ll post it on my About page. :D

    As for my m…no comment.

  5. Nicknames aren’t as “cool” as they used to be, from what I can tell. But I use frotzed because Ben is such a common name! I can’t sign up for anything with the username “Ben” or “Ben G.” or anything like that. I had to come up with a name that would give me a continuity across many many forums and places on the Net.

That said, let’s think of one for you … how about Curly?

  6. @Ben: I have similar problems, as Scott was once a popular name (at least in the 70′s when I was born). Occasionally I’ll get onto a new board and grab Scott K. or even Scott as a user name. So then I have a bunch of weird sign-in names and some normal ones. A peeve of mine is that most forums don’t allow you to change your user name. I had to create new accounts on the Ubuntu and K2 forums. Surprisingly, Virb let me make changes (which reminds me that I’ve done next to nothing with my account).

Does that make you Larry or Moe?

  7. Definitely Moe. Larry was a dimwit. :D .

  9. @Ben: I could never stand Larry, either (PS – I wonder why your smilies aren’t converting to graphics?).

@Willa: Hey, if you’re going to go to the trouble of roasting whole garlic cloves for your mashed potatoes, then you might as well use fresh parsley instead of the dried stuff. :)

  11. I think it must be a punctuation/space thing…

Test (period right after) :) .

Test (period before incl. space). :)
