Spam Getting Through

Posted: 02.06.2007 in Technical

Have any other WP 2.1 users been seeing spam comments and trackbacks get through Akismet over the last day and a half? I have one post in particular that keeps getting hits for adult dating sites. I finally turned off comments and pings for that post.

  1. Hmmm. I’ve had to double up on my spam protection lately. If I use only Akismet I get 1 or 2 spam comments/trackbacks per day that slip through. But since doubling it up with Bad Behavior the spam has completely been stopped.

  2. I think I am going to have to double up on the spam protection, too. I could always use measures like closing commenting on posts older than 30 days, or start moderating comments (by first-timers or all), but I want to allow good intentioned people to comment freely on old or new content.

  3. Comment moderation is definitely a viable option. Different people think differently about it. Personally, I don’t, and never plan to moderate comments on my blog. But that’s just me. ;)

  4. I did comment moderation when I started out blogging. It was the WordPress default. You had to have your first comment moderated, but after that you had relative freedom (unless you posted multiple links). I still have the multi-links block in place, but I took out the “pre-approved” rule because I saw instances of people who had been previously approved posting comments after moderated, but yet to be approved (and thus invisible to them) comments that were made by others. After I approved all of the comments the flow of the discussion looked all out of order.

BTW, I installed both plugins: Bad Behavior and FeedBurner. Thanks for the tips!
