Defense Wins Championships and Other Playoff Myths

David Schoenfield has a good article over on ESPN.com about the top ten NFL playoff myths. While several of the verdicts are split, it is a good analysis and worth the read if you are a football fan. I confess that I held to a few of these myths myself.

How to Be the Middle Man or Woman

On Monday I heard this hilarious Dilbertesque piece on NPR’s Day to Day. It will not be long before someone at work refers to their “wheel-house” and means it.

PCA Pastor Dies During Sermon About Heaven

First off, let me express my condolences to the Arnold family. I lived with Dean Arnold my senior year of college and had the chance to meet his father on a few occasions. I was always impressed by the way Jack Arnold encouraged his congregation to see worship as a dialogue. The service would end and Sunday School would start — during which there was an opportunity to contemplate the sermon. Then the people would reconvene in the sanctuary to discuss the message with the preacher…or so that is how it was explained to me.

I had heard of Reverend Arnold’s passing earlier in the week, but it was not until I saw this story on Yahoo that I found out about the extraordinary circumstances surrounding his death. Well done, thou good and faithful servant.

Ashlee Not Lip Syncing at Orange Bowl

While the Orange Bowl crowd did not seem too interested in having Ashlee Simpson kick off the halftime show — she received a lukewarm reception just a couple minutes ago — at least they were treated to live vocals instead of a recording. Too bad that for the first few bars her microphone was turned off. There she was belting it out and no sound was coming out. Then you heard some technical guy saying, “Testing, testing.” It was funny, but not quite as funny as Simpson’s appearance on SNL.
